Passports 101

If you’ve been thinking of traveling internationally, you might need to get a passport or renew an existing one. You’ll likely fall into one of four categories: No passport and need to get one, your passport is expiring soon, your passport has already expired, or you’re obtaining a passport for a minor. Keep reading to learn how to apply for or renew your passport in each scenario. For forms and additional information, visit the U.S. Department of State website.

No Passport
First-timers will need to apply in person at a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office, public library, or local government office, and bring a few things, including:
• Completed Form DS-11
• Original or certified copy of proof of citizenship (e.g., birth certificate) and a photocopy of it
• Copy of your photo ID. Note: You will also need a physical photo ID.
• Photo that meets all requirements
• Payment

Expiring Passport
If your passport expires soon, you can renew it by mail and include:

• Completed Form DS-82
• Your most recent passport
• Any name change documents (if applicable)
• Photo that meets all requirements
• Payment

Aim to renew your passport six to nine months before it expires or your planned travel, as some countries require six months of passport validity before your travel date.

Expired Passport
You can also renew by mail, but you must meet three requirements:

1. Issued within the last 15 years (when you were 16 or older)
2. Issued in your current name (or you must present legal proof of name change)
3. Must be undamaged and in your possession

Passport For Minors
Similar to first-time applicants, all children under 16 must apply in person. They’ll need two parents or legal guardians present, along with:
• Form DS-11
• Proof of citizenship (and a photocopy)
• Documentation of parental relationship (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or adoption decree)
• Parent or guardian ID (and a photocopy)
• Parental consent (i.e., both parents/guardians applying in person or providing notarized consent for absent person)
• Photo that meets requirements
• Application fee
