INSIDER TIPS

On the islands, dive in and enjoy water sports. Make a splash with kayaking, snorkelling and paddleboarding, or ride the waves on a boat trip to a nearby island.

Throughout the summer, Skiathos hosts a mix of art and historical events: from ancient Greek tragedies and comedies to folk music and dance shows. There’s something for everyone.

In Crete, regular carnival celebrations take place from June to September, or head to Anogia for its wine festival featuring folk music and dancing.

For Athens, the best airport to fly into is Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos. Heraklion International Airport is the main airport in Crete, also offering international flights. If you’re visiting Skiathos, you’ll fly into the island's only airport, Skiathos Airport Alexandros Papadiamantis (JSI).

Be sure to do your research on public transport options for bus and taxi services, or you can rent a car if you prefer the flexibility of getting around on your own – ideal for island exploration.

In the summer months, temperatures can sit in the 30’s – perfect for sun-lovers who want to kick back on a lounger with a cocktail in hand! If you want to avoid the crowds but still make the most of the weather, then April to June, and September to October are also good times to visit.

Beat the blues with some winter sun: Crete has mild and sunny weather throughout the winter months, with temperatures reaching 16 degrees.
