Kauai, Hawaii
Called the Garden Island, Kauai lives up to its nickname with verdant rain forests, lofty cliffs, expansive valleys, and golden beaches. Its varied landscape attracts adventure-minded travelers and those looking to escape the crowds on Hawaii’s more densely populated islands. From the high cliffs that rise above the shore on the Napali Coast to the recesses of Waimea Canyon, there are miles of natural beauty practically begging travelers to strap on their hiking boots. In fact, on foot is one of the best ways to see the island, since 90 percent of Kauai is inaccessible by car. Guides can lead you along bluffs, foothills, beaches, sugarcane fields, or even waterfalls.
If the water beckons, the cascading falls near Hanalei Bay are great for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or fishing. And on the south shore, you can snorkel or surf in Poipu Beach’s sandy-bottomed pool. If a slower pace is more your speed, the sites on the south shore offer quaint boutiques and oceanside restaurants serving Pacific Rim cuisine. Don’t leave without attending a luau, where lomi salmon, sweet potatoes, and coconut pudding might all be served.
